Methods and Applications

  • Visual testing — VT.
  • Magnetic particle testing — MT.
  • Penetrant testing — PT.
  • Ultrasonic testing — UT.
  • Eddy current testing (ET) — a Level II certified specialist; testing arrangements are agreed for each project.
  • Surface contact check (Blue test) — assessment of the contact quality when fitting the propeller to the tail shaft.
  • Thickness measurements of hull structures.

Watertightness and Leak Testing

  • Water filling.
  • Compressed air.
  • Penetrant leak testing.

Classification Society Approvals

ABS approval for NDT covers UT, PT, MT and VT. ABS approval for Hull Gauging is limited to vessels outside the ESP and ESDC programmes. The Bureau Veritas certificate covers thickness measurements and reporting for BV-classed ships and mobile offshore units. These scopes are not interchangeable: applicability is checked before each order begins.

Working Within Approval Scopes

The inspection subject, method, personnel qualifications, valid approval and classification society requirements are checked for each order. Detailed certificate scopes are listed in the Quality and Safety section.
